Arthur Gray Collection of Australian Kangaroo Stamps to Sell at Public Auction
Collection Expected to Realize between $6 and $8 Million (U.S.)
Arthur Gray’s collection of Australian stamps is one of the most important stamp collections ever assembled and is certainly one of the most valuable. Shreves Philatelic Galleries, Inc. (www.shreves.com), in cooperation with Prestige Philately, is pleased to announce the opportunity given by prominent Australian, Arthur Gray, to sell the most exciting portion of his exceptional collection – the incomparable collection of Australian Kangaroo and Map stamps – at public auction on February 22 – 23, 2007.
Mr. Gray’s incomparable collection of Australian “Kangaroo”; and “Map” stamps, the first stamps issued by the Commonwealth of Australia, have been selected from his collection to sell at the February 2007 auction. The Kangaroo and Map Series has long been regarded as the classic issue of Australian Commonwealth and are among the most popularly collected stamps in the world.
The Gray Collection of Kangaroos is widely regarded as the most comprehensive collection ever formed, containing a remarkable number of the most famous rarities known from this field. Items include:
- Essays: unaccepted designs prior to the issuance of the final design – most are unique
- Proofs: considered to be very rare material, many are unique in private hands
- Mint stamps including...
- A nearly complete representation of printer’s monogram and imprint multiples, which are blocks or strips from the bottom margins of the sheet that show the various printer’s monograms in the sheet selvage. These items are enormously popular.
- An extraordinary complete set to the 5/- value of First Day Covers. Other than the 1p value, the covers are either unique or recorded only in the Royal Collection
The Gray Collection has been exhibited numerous times and has won virtually every major stamp-exhibiting prize imaginable. Several serious Australian philatelists have already commented on how the collection could realize in excess of $A10 million ($7.5M U.S.). This would make it not only the most valuable collection of Australian stamps ever to appear at auction, but one of the most valuable single issue collections of any country.
Shreves Philatelic Galleries, Inc. (www.shreves.com) will offer the Gray Collection at our New York City auction galleries on February 22 – 23, 2007, with pre-sale viewings in NYC on February 19 – 21, 2007.
Online live bidding, with real-time audio, will be available for individuals unable to personally attend the auction in New York City. However, participants must register at www.shreves.com 24 hours before the start of the auction.
A special all-color hardbound catalog will be produced for the sale and will be available mid-January for $75.00 (A$100) each. Interested parties can view the sale in its entirety on our website beginning mid-January.
